About Katowice

Katowice is the capital of the Upper Silesia region and one of Poland’s most dynamic urban centers. Once primarily industrial, the city has undergone a remarkable transformation into a modern metropolis known for its cultural, academic and business life. Highlights include the iconic Spodek Arena, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR), the Silesian Museum, and a vibrant network of galleries, cafés and green spaces.

In recognition of its commitment to education, research and culture, Katowice was awarded the title of European City of Science 2024 (Europejskie Miasto Nauki Katowice 2024).

Getting there

By plane

The area is served by two international airports:

  • Katowice International Airport (KTW) — main local airport. Official site: katowice-airport.com.
  • Kraków John Paul II International Airport (KRK) — an alternative with many international connections. Official site: krakowairport.pl.

Connection from Katowice Airport (KTW) to the city centre

Direct train (Koleje Śląskie — S9)
Since late 2023 there is a train service that connects the airport area (station listed as Pyrzowice Lotnisko) with the Silesian rail network. The service is operated by Koleje Śląskie (line S9). Trains call at the airport station which is roughly 400–600 m from the terminal area (short walk). There are multiple trains per day (check the timetable for exact frequency and the current route since seasonal and timetable changes can apply).

Direct airport bus (AP)
The dedicated airport bus line AP (operated under the metropolitan transport authority) links Katowice Airport with central Katowice, including the main railway station (Katowice Dworzec PKP). Buses typically run roughly every 30 minutes during the day; journey time to the city centre is about 35–45 minutes, depending on traffic. For current timetables and fares consult the metropolitan transport authority website: Metropolia ZTM.

By train

Katowice is a major railway hub with frequent connections to Polish cities such as Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Gdańsk and Poznań. There are also international services and good rail links to nearby countries (for example to Vienna, Prague and other Central European cities). The modern Katowice Railway Station (Dworzec PKP) is located in the city centre, adjacent to the main bus terminal.

Getting to the campus

The University of Silesia main campus is situated close to downtown Katowice:

  • 10 minutes on foot from the Rynek (Main Square)
  • 15 minutes on foot from Katowice Railway Station (Dworzec PKP)
  • 20 minutes on foot from the main bus terminal

Local public transport (trams and buses) provide convenient connections to the campus area. If you arrive by AP bus at Katowice Dworzec PKP, you can either walk, take a tram or a short local bus ride to the campus.

Accommodation

Katowice offers a wide range of accommodation, from budget options to international hotel chains. Many hotels are within walking distance of the University campus.

The three hotels closest to the conference venue are:

  • Courtyard by Marriott Katowice City Center — modern business hotel in the city centre (search for the hotel page for booking details).
  • Novotel Katowice Centrum — comfortable and conference-friendly, within a short walk of the campus and city centre.
  • Qubus Hotel Katowice — contemporary hotel with convenient access to the University and cultural attractions.

Note: early booking is recommended as September is often busy with conferences and cultural events.
